Collateral Beauty
Trailer Tuesday

Trailer Tuesday vol. 45: Free Fire, The White Helmets, Supersonic + more!

I love this week of Trailer Tuesday simply because it includes the man himself, Will Smith. Isn’t that reason enough to keep reading? It’s not? Oh. Well I think it is… but if you really need more than Will Smith, you can also have a Netflix documentary in Syria, a hilarious shoot-out, the secrets of Oasis and John Lennon, and a thief who steals a river… or something like that.

1. Collateral Beauty
When it is released? 30th Dec 2016 (UK), 16th Dec 2016 (USA)
What is it about? A tragic event sends a New York ad man on a downward spiral.
Immediate thoughts? I have my suspicions about how this will end… but I won’t tell you just in case it’s true ;P It could be reaaaal cheesy, but I love Will Smith and it made me emosh so I’m including it!

2. The White Helmets
When it is released? 16th Sep 2016 (Netflix)
What is it about? As daily airstrikes pound civilian targets in Syria, a group of indomitable first responders risk their lives to rescue victims from the rubble.
Immediate thoughts? Hundreds of bombs, every day?

3. Free Fire
When it is released? 31st Mar 2017 (UK), 2017 (USA)
What is it about? Set in Boston in 1978, a meeting in a deserted warehouse between two gangs turns into a shootout and a game of survival.
Immediate thoughts? An injection of comedy in an otherwise serious and violent scene gives Free Fire a lot of promise!

4. Supersonic
When it is released? 14th Oct 2016 (UK)
What is it about? An in-depth look at the life and music of Manchester-based rock band, Oasis.
Immediate thoughts? Not knowing much about Oasis, this would definitely be interesting to watch… All I know is that they are one of the biggest British bands, I had no idea they rose to fame in just 3 years!

5. The Lennon Report
When it is released? 7th Oct 2016 (USA)
What is it about? The unheard true story of the moments after John Lennon was shot as seen through the eyes of those who lived it. Alan Weiss, an ambitious young news producer, finds himself in a position to break the biggest story of the year following a violent motorcycle accident. The emergency department at Roosevelt Hospital discovers a John Doe shooting victim is the worlds biggest rock star and struggles to keep the news quiet while working to save his life.
Immediate thoughts? The truth is always so interesting, isn’t it?

6. The River Thief
When it is released? 14th Oct 2016 (USA, internet)
What is it about? Diz (Joel Courtney) is a reckless teenage drifter living life on the run. Abandoned by his parents as a child, he looks out for himself and doesn’t accept handouts. He takes whatever he wants and runs. Jaded and determined to answer to no one, Diz lives a life marked by thievery and abandonment. Things change for Diz when he floats into a small town on the Snake River. There he is confronted by an unflappable old man named Marty and falls for Marty’s guarded granddaughter, Selah. When Diz robs a local drug-dealing crazy, he becomes the owner of a giant pile of cash and the target of two vicious killers. With more money than he knows what to do with, and criminals at his heels, Diz puts the people he’s learned to care about in danger, still trying to win Selah. But some things can’t be stolen or bought. The River Thief is a film about guilt, self-sacrifice, and accepting life as a gift.
Immediate thoughts? While I’m not sure about it, I’m sort of intrigued by The River Thief… But I can’t put my finger on why.

Thank you for reading 🙂 Let me know if you have a favourite trailer this week!

I Am Legend

The Movies Tag Q36 + Q37: Most overrated actress + Best tear-jerker?

QUESTION: Most overrated actress?
ANSWER: No-one at all

As you may be able to tell, I have ummed and ahhed over this question for a few weeks now. I have finally come to a conclusion. There are no overrated actresses. There. That’s my answer.

Moving on…

QUESTION: Best tear-jerker?
ANSWER: I Am Legend

Man that trailer’s good.

I guess you might not really call I Am Legend a tear-jerker, because it’s not a film that makes you cry all the way through. However, I have chosen it as my best tear-jerker because it features the scene that made me cry like I have never cried to any other scene in any other film. Ever.

SPOILERS FROM HERE ON OUT. Just warning you.

Let me bring you up to speed: The main character of I Am Legend is played by Will Smith. His character’s name is Robert. Robert has a dog named Sam. They are seemingly the last human and dog on Earth, and they have a very strong relationship. Earth is infested with human-esk, zombie-like creatures that will of course infect you with their disease if they manage to cut you.

The scene I mentioned briefly before is the scene in which Robert realises Sam has been infected by these creatures, and is becoming like them. Rabid, violent, vicious, dangerous… He loves her more than anything. He knows she loves him, but she is showing much more anger. And much more teeth. If Robert dies, the human race will die too. He knows what he has to do, but that doesn’t make it any easier.

There is a struggle, but Robert wins… You see the life drain from Sam’s body, her eyes. You feel the pain of Robert letting his best and only friend go.

It’s one of the most destroying things I’ve ever had to watch. I cried with my entire body. I physically felt it everywhere, as if it was happening to me right there. I have teary eyes and a lump in my throat recalling it now.

So, it might not be classed as your typical tear-jerker, but watching just that scene alone, I cried the tears of ten-thousand tear-jerkers.

My apologies that it has been a while since the last Movies Tag question. Hopefully now that we are over the hurdle that was question 36, they will go back to your normal once-weekly schedule! So check back next week for the next question: Remake you wish had never been made?

The Theory of Everything

The Movies Tag Q14: Favourite biographical film?

QUESTION: Favourite biographical film?
ANSWER: The Theory of Everything

I just thought that Eddie Redmayne was exquisite. He takes on seemingly very challenging and diverse roles which constantly prove his talents as an actor. Just look at the upcoming The Danish Girl. That’s why I am trusting him to do a good job with my beloved Harry Potter universe in the 2016 film, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Felicity Jones was also very captivating. The whole film was very eye-opening for me. I didn’t know much about Stephen Hawking prior to watching The Theory of Everything, apart from that he is an incredibly intelligent man with a disability. I am so grateful to be let into Hawking’s life in this way, as I now see him better as a person. I see that he is witty, playful, and emotional, amongst a lollipop of other fabulosities. And it makes it so much better that Hawking himself approved of the film.

It is a well-told story, that is visually compelling as well as mentally.

Some other biographical film experiences that are worth mentioning are the heartbreaking Schindler’s List starring Liam Neeson, and Will Smith’s The Pursuit of Happyness

I remember watching the latter, and I remember being quite moved by it, but I don’t actually remember it. Don’t worry, that’s not a reflection of the film itself. I just do that with films apparently – love them and then forget them completely. I think it’s a perk, as I get to watch it for the first time all over again!

There’s a bunch of other biographical films on my watch list as well which I am trying to find the time to get around to, such as Foxcatcher, American Sniper, The Conjuring, The Butler, Finding Neverland, Thelma and Louise, A Beautiful Mind… the list goes on. And on, and on and on!

I hope you enjoyed this weekend’s The Movies Tag post! Let me know what your favourite biographical film is so I can add it to my watch list!
