Cardboard Boxer
Trailer Tuesday

Trailer Tuesday vol. 44: Spock, Matchbreaker, the first A.I.-made trailer + more!

This week features a rather ground-breaking trailer, if you ask me. IBM are the first to commission an A.I. to create a film trailer. They asked their A.I. to analyse the film Morgan along with some existing horror film trailers. Once it was done, it selected the parts of the film it thought would work well in a trailer, and I’ve got to say it did a great job. While the trailer feels like a horror trailer, it has a unique style that is unlike common cliche horror trailers we see all too often.

Anyway, if a step towards the scary, amazing future isn’t your cup of tea, then maybe an anime, the heart-wrenching Cardboard Boxer, or a bunch of interesting women would be?

1. For the Love of Spock
When it is released? 9th Sep 2016 (USA)
What is it about? An examination of the enduring appeal of Leonard Nimoy and his portrayal of Spock in Star Trek (1966).
Immediate thoughts? For the Love of Spock indeed!! Any Star Trek fan, any Leonard Nimoy fan, will join me in wanting to see this. ❤

2. The Matchbreaker
When it is released? 2016 (USA)
What is it about? When an idealistic romantic gets fired from his day job, he is offered a “one-time gig” to break up a girl’s relationship for her disapproving parents. This “one-time” gig spreads through word-of-mouth and he ends up becoming a professional match-breaker. However, he ends up falling for one of his clients and must figure out how to balance his secret job with his love-life.
Immediate thoughts? Christina Grimmie should be heard!

3. Cardboard Boxer
When it is released? Sep 2016 (USA)
What is it about? A homeless man is recruited by a bunch of rich kids to fight other impoverished people.
Immediate thoughts? Oww this looks so nice, and humbling. Ow my heart.

4. Morgan
When it is released? 2nd Sep 2016 (UK and USA)
What is it about? A corporate risk-management consultant must decide whether or not to terminate an artificially created humanoid being.
Immediate thoughts? A trailer for a film about an A.I., with clips chosen by an A.I. Blooooell that’s pretty cool. I was expecting the trailer to be edited entirely by the A.I., but it’s still so interesting to see what clips they picked!

5. Shut In
When it is released? 11th Nov 2016 (USA)
What is it about? A heart-pounding thriller about a widowed child psychologist who lives in an isolated existence in rural New England. Caught in a deadly winter storm, she must find a way to rescue a young boy before he disappears forever.
Immediate thoughts? I loved Naomi Watts in The Ring, it’s definitely one of my favourite horror films and it’s likely she has something to do with that, so I’m excited to see her do her horror thang in Shut In.

6. Max Steel
When it is released? 25th Oct 2016 (UK), 14th Oct 2016 (USA)
What is it about? The adventures of teenager Max McGrath and alien companion Steel, who must harness and combine their tremendous new powers to evolve into the turbo-charged superhero Max Steel.
Immediate thoughts? This film looks like just another Spider-Man. It looks like it is tailored more towards to younger generation, and I’m not keen on the little Steel character so far… But the ‘is my mum dangerous?!’ line got me, and I’m loving the metal work with all the lines and stuff (much technical, so sense)

7. Certain Women
When it is released? 9th Oct 2016 (London Film Festival, UK), 14th Oct 2016 (USA)
What is it about? The lives of three women intersect in small-town America, where each is imperfectly blazing a trail.
Immediate thoughts? Oddly peaceful, this trailer for Certain Women intrigues me more than I would expect it to. I’ve also just realised that this is one of the films which will have a poster featured in this week’s Artwork Wednesday!

8. Miss Hokusai
When it is released? 5th Feb 2016 (UK), 14th Oct 2016 (USA)
What is it about? The life and works of Japanese artist and ukiyo-e painter Katsushika Hokusai, as seen from the eyes of his daughter, Katsushika O-Ei.
Immediate thoughts? I’m including this trailer for Miss Hokusai more so because of the style, which I enjoy, but the story certainly has weighty substance too.

What do you think of the A.I.-made Morgan trailer? Yay or nay?

Artwork Wednesday

Artwork Wednesday: Table 19, The Blackcoat’s Daughter, Fantastic Beasts + more!

Yay for the return of Artwork Wednesday! We’ve a nice round number of posters today with a bold six. There’s probably almost every colour under the sun, thanks to the Joker, and two stunning examples showing how greyscale is best done elegantly. Plus, a few other bright bits in between.

1. The Girl on the Train

© Universal Pictures/eOne Entertainment

I first saw the middle section of the poster before I saw the rest of it. That shape is everything that captured me.

2. Table 19

© Fox Searchlight Pictures/20th Century Fox

My first thought was that someone has been very sneaky and cheeky with that fork middle finger… Otherwise, this is one slick poster!

3. The Blackcoat’s Daughter

© A24

I love that Emma has two different poses for each side, that the top of the tallest building meets her eyes, and the use of the buildings to connect the faces.

4. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

© Warner Bros.

I love the detail and structure to this poster. And of course the fact that it’s FANTASTIC BEASTS!! I risked it by looking at this poster, cause I’m steering clear of anything that could involve spoilers!

5. Star Trek Beyond

© Paramount Pictures

There is a definite theme running through all the Beyond posters, which I love, but this one is different (of course!). It’s such a unique angle, I love, love what’s been done with the typography, and the colours are so stand-out.

6. Suicide Squad

© Warner Bros.

The bold, brashness is hard to ignore. I was drawn to this one the most out of the bunch, I think it was the Ha Ha’s and the eyeball… probably! 😉

Quick! One to six, which one would you pick if you had to put one up on your wall right now?

The Space Between Us
Trailer Tuesday

Trailer Tuesday vol. 36: Little Men, Morgan, The Space Between Us + more!

So you wanna hear something really annoying? Suuuuure you doooo! I had prepared last week’s Trailer Tuesday down to collecting the YouTube video links, which is one of the last things I do. It was all ready in a text edit file on my computer. MY COMPUTER!! My computer then proceeded to break, and wouldn’t boot past the logo screen. Le sigh. Consequently, I have included last week’s trailers in this week’s Trailer Tuesday. Voila! Problemo, solvelo!

1. Beauty and the Beast
When it is released? 17th Mar 2017 (UK and USA)
What is it about? An adaptation of the classic fairy-tale about a monstrous prince and a young woman who fall in love.

2. Indignation

What is it about? In 1951, Marcus, a working-class Jewish student from New Jersey, attends a small Ohio college, where he struggles with sexual repression and cultural disaffection, amid the ongoing Korean War.
Immediate thoughts? I love the intrigue. I want to know what happens!

3. Little Men
When it is released? 5th Aug 2016 (USA)
What is it about? A new pair of best friends have their bond tested by their parents’ battle over a dress shop lease.
Immediate thoughts? I don’t know, this seems so nice. I really like the editing, the cards, the music, the story shown, it’s lovely.

4. Ghostbusters
When it is released? 15th Jul 2016 (UK and USA)
What is it about? 30 years after Ghostbusters took the world by storm, the beloved franchise makes its long-awaited return. Director Paul Feig brings his fresh take to the supernatural comedy, joined by some of the funniest actors working today.
Immediate thoughts? OOOOOH I’m loving this!!

5. Personal Shopper
When it is released? 19th Oct 2016 (France)
What is it about? Revolves around a ghost story that takes place in the fashion underworld of Paris.
Immediate thoughts? They say any press is good press, so the fact that Personal Shopper was booed at Cannes has only made me more interested than I would have been.

6. The Witness
When it is released? 3rd Jun 2016 (USA)
What is it about? The name ‘Kitty Genovese’ became synonymous with apathy after news that she was stabbed to death while 38 witnesses did nothing. Fifty years later, her brother uncovers a lie that transformed his life, condemned a city and defined an era.
Immediate thoughts? I’d like to know more about this story, I just hope the film (from a filmmaking point of view) has a conclusive ending, even if Bill doesn’t find one.

7. Sausage Party
When it is released? 2nd Sep 2016 (UK), 12th Aug 2016 (USA)
What is it about? An animated movie about one sausage’s quest to discover the truth about his existence.
Immediate thoughts? It’s still good! …And traumatising.

When it is released? 22nd Jul 2016 (UK and USA)
What is it about? The USS Enterprise crew explores the furthest reaches of uncharted space, where they encounter a mysterious new enemy who puts them and everything the Federation stands for to the test.
Immediate thoughts? It’s Star Trek, come on, how can you not love it (as my sister would say). I love what I’m seeing and hearing! And I love the look of that white-haired woman!

9. The Blackout Experiments
When it is released? 22nd Jul 2016 (USA)
What is it about? This documentary follows a group of people who discover the ultra-scary, psycho-sexual horror experience Blackout, and develop an obsession that hijacks their lives and blurs the line between reality and paranoid fantasy.
Immediate thoughts? Oh. my god. This looks… crazy.

10. Independence Day: Resurgence
When it is released? 23rd Jun 2016 (UK), 24th Jun 2016 (USA)
What is it about? Two decades after the first Independence Day invasion, Earth is faced with a new extra-Solar threat. But will mankind’s new space defenses be enough?
Immediate thoughts? I dislike long trailers. By long I mean anything longer than 2 minutes usually. This extended trailer is over 4 and a half minutes, and I absolutely loved the relaxed, yet still trailer-like feel. Kudos to the trailer editor.

11. Finding Dory
When it is released? 29th Jul 2016 (UK), 17th Jun 2016 (USA)
What is it about? The friendly-but-forgetful blue tang fish reunites with her loved ones, and everyone learns a few things about the real meaning of family along the way.
Immediate thoughts? I wasn’t expecting to feel any different about Finding Dory from this trailer, but it almost had me in tears!

12. Seoul Searching
When it is released? May 2016 (USA)
What is it about? During the 1980’s, the Korean government created a special summer camp for “gyopo” or foreign born teenagers where they could spend their summer in Seoul to learn about their motherland. While the intentions of the program were honorable, the activities of the teens were not. The program was eventually cancelled after a few years because the government simply could not control the youth. Seoul Searching is a teen comedy and coming of age film, based on a true story about one of the summer camps that took place in 1986.
Immediate thoughts? One of Justin Chon’s latest films oooooh

13. Morgan
When it is released? 2nd Sep 2016 (USA)
What is it about? Morgan is about a corporate risk-management consultant who has to decide and determine whether or not to terminate an artificial being’s life that was made in a laboratory environment.
Immediate thoughts? Ya yaya?

14. The Space Between Us
When it is released? 19th Aug 2016 (UK and USA)
What is it about? A young man raised by scientists on Mars returns to Earth to find his father.
Immediate thoughts? I LOVE THIS!! SO MUCH MORE THAN EXPECTED!! Give it a chance, stick it out through the beginning. The concept is genius!

15. The Fundamentals of Caring
When it is released? 16th Jun 2016 (Edinburgh International Film Festival, UK), 24th Jun 2016 (USA)
What is it about? A man suffering an incredible amount of loss enrolls in a class about care-giving that changes his perspective on life.
Immediate thoughts? Yeah, this is kind of promising!

See you next week! 🙂
