Trailer Tuesday

Trailer Tuesday vol. 46: Annabelle 2, Billie Joe Armstrong, Flock of Dudes + more!

Two films that did well at the box office return this week in the form of their sequels: Fifty Shades Darker and Annabelle 2. Clearly two quite different films but both with a sense of darkness (no, I’m not just talking about fifty shades getting darker!). The word dark has lost all meaning. Let’s move on!

1. Fifty Shades Darker
When it is released? 10th Feb 2017 (UK and USA)
What is it about? While Christian wrestles with his inner demons, Anastasia must confront the anger and envy of the women who came before her.
Immediate thoughts? I wonder if this will have more substance than the first one seemed to have.. (sorry for judging without seeing but..)

2. Trolls
When it is released? 21st Oct 2016 (UK), 4th Nov 2016 (USA)
What is it about? From the creators of Shrek comes the most smart, funny, irreverent animated comedy of the year, DreamWorks’ Trolls. This holiday season, enter a colorful, wondrous world populated by hilariously unforgettable characters and discover the story of the overly optimistic Trolls, with a constant song on their lips, and the comically pessimistic Bergens, who are only happy when they have trolls in their stomach. Featuring original music from Justin Timberlake, and soon-to-be classic mash-ups of songs from other popular artists, the film stars the voice talents of Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake, Russell Brand, James Corden, Kunal Nayyar, Ron Funches, Icona Pop, Gwen Stefani, and many more. DreamWorks’ TROLLS is a fresh, broad comedy filled with music, heart and hair-raising adventures. In November of 2016, nothing can prepare you for our new Troll world.
Immediate thoughts? Ouch! My emotions ;(

3. Annabelle 2
When it is released? 26th May 2017 (UK), 19th May 2017 (USA)
What is it about? Several years after the tragic death of their little girl, a dollmaker and his wife welcome a nun and several girls from a shuttered orphanage into their home, soon becoming the target of the dollmaker’s possessed creation, Annabelle.
Immediate thoughts? oooooowwwww. I haven’t seen the first one, but of course this looks creepy!

4. The Caretaker
When it is released? 30th Sep 2016 (USA)
What is it about? A young woman returns home to care for her gravely ill grandmother, only to begin sleepwalking and envisioning spirits.

5. Christine
When it is released? 14th Oct 2016 (USA)
What is it about? The story of 1970s TV reporter Christine Chubbuck.
Immediate thoughts? Things just got interesting.

6. Ordinary World
When it is released? 14th Oct 2016 (USA)
What is it about? An aging punk rocker copes with life after rock.
Immediate thoughts? Erm, Billie Joe Armstrong!!

7. Nocturnal Animals
When it is released? 4th Nov 2016 (UK), 9th Dec 2016 (USA)
What is it about? An art gallery owner is haunted by her ex-husband’s novel, a violent thriller she interprets as a veiled threat and a symbolic revenge tale.
Immediate thoughts? Myyyyystery! Also I’m totally nocturnal soo..

8. Flock of Dudes
When it is released? 30th Sep 2016 (USA)
What is it about? A 30-something year old decides to “break up” with his best buds in order to finally grow up.
Immediate thoughts? Heh, I like the idea of a break-up film between friends, in the style of a couple!

9. Harry and Snowman
When it is released? 30th Sep 2016 (USA)
What is it about? Dutch immigrant, Harry deLeyer, journeyed to the United States after World War II and developed a transformative relationship with a broken down Amish plow horse he rescued off a slaughter truck bound for the glue factory. Harry paid eighty dollars for the horse and named him Snowman. In less than two years, Harry & Snowman went on to win the triple crown of show jumping, beating the nations blue bloods and they became famous and traveled around the world together. Their chance meeting at a Pennsylvania horse auction saved them both and crafted a friendship that lasted a lifetime. Eighty-six year old Harry tells their Cinderella love story firsthand, as he continues to train on today’s show jumping circuit.
Immediate thoughts? While I don’t necessarily agree with show jumping or horse racing, the connection between animals and humans always gets me, and Harry and Snowman seems to be no exception!

What did you think of the trailers this week? Anything take your fancy?

Cardboard Boxer
Trailer Tuesday

Trailer Tuesday vol. 44: Spock, Matchbreaker, the first A.I.-made trailer + more!

This week features a rather ground-breaking trailer, if you ask me. IBM are the first to commission an A.I. to create a film trailer. They asked their A.I. to analyse the film Morgan along with some existing horror film trailers. Once it was done, it selected the parts of the film it thought would work well in a trailer, and I’ve got to say it did a great job. While the trailer feels like a horror trailer, it has a unique style that is unlike common cliche horror trailers we see all too often.

Anyway, if a step towards the scary, amazing future isn’t your cup of tea, then maybe an anime, the heart-wrenching Cardboard Boxer, or a bunch of interesting women would be?

1. For the Love of Spock
When it is released? 9th Sep 2016 (USA)
What is it about? An examination of the enduring appeal of Leonard Nimoy and his portrayal of Spock in Star Trek (1966).
Immediate thoughts? For the Love of Spock indeed!! Any Star Trek fan, any Leonard Nimoy fan, will join me in wanting to see this. ❤

2. The Matchbreaker
When it is released? 2016 (USA)
What is it about? When an idealistic romantic gets fired from his day job, he is offered a “one-time gig” to break up a girl’s relationship for her disapproving parents. This “one-time” gig spreads through word-of-mouth and he ends up becoming a professional match-breaker. However, he ends up falling for one of his clients and must figure out how to balance his secret job with his love-life.
Immediate thoughts? Christina Grimmie should be heard!

3. Cardboard Boxer
When it is released? Sep 2016 (USA)
What is it about? A homeless man is recruited by a bunch of rich kids to fight other impoverished people.
Immediate thoughts? Oww this looks so nice, and humbling. Ow my heart.

4. Morgan
When it is released? 2nd Sep 2016 (UK and USA)
What is it about? A corporate risk-management consultant must decide whether or not to terminate an artificially created humanoid being.
Immediate thoughts? A trailer for a film about an A.I., with clips chosen by an A.I. Blooooell that’s pretty cool. I was expecting the trailer to be edited entirely by the A.I., but it’s still so interesting to see what clips they picked!

5. Shut In
When it is released? 11th Nov 2016 (USA)
What is it about? A heart-pounding thriller about a widowed child psychologist who lives in an isolated existence in rural New England. Caught in a deadly winter storm, she must find a way to rescue a young boy before he disappears forever.
Immediate thoughts? I loved Naomi Watts in The Ring, it’s definitely one of my favourite horror films and it’s likely she has something to do with that, so I’m excited to see her do her horror thang in Shut In.

6. Max Steel
When it is released? 25th Oct 2016 (UK), 14th Oct 2016 (USA)
What is it about? The adventures of teenager Max McGrath and alien companion Steel, who must harness and combine their tremendous new powers to evolve into the turbo-charged superhero Max Steel.
Immediate thoughts? This film looks like just another Spider-Man. It looks like it is tailored more towards to younger generation, and I’m not keen on the little Steel character so far… But the ‘is my mum dangerous?!’ line got me, and I’m loving the metal work with all the lines and stuff (much technical, so sense)

7. Certain Women
When it is released? 9th Oct 2016 (London Film Festival, UK), 14th Oct 2016 (USA)
What is it about? The lives of three women intersect in small-town America, where each is imperfectly blazing a trail.
Immediate thoughts? Oddly peaceful, this trailer for Certain Women intrigues me more than I would expect it to. I’ve also just realised that this is one of the films which will have a poster featured in this week’s Artwork Wednesday!

8. Miss Hokusai
When it is released? 5th Feb 2016 (UK), 14th Oct 2016 (USA)
What is it about? The life and works of Japanese artist and ukiyo-e painter Katsushika Hokusai, as seen from the eyes of his daughter, Katsushika O-Ei.
Immediate thoughts? I’m including this trailer for Miss Hokusai more so because of the style, which I enjoy, but the story certainly has weighty substance too.

What do you think of the A.I.-made Morgan trailer? Yay or nay?

Voyage of Time
Artwork Wednesday

Artwork Wednesday: Blair Witch, Voyage of Time + AHS

Something creepy, something spacey, and something creepy and spacey! This is what you’re in for in this episode of Artwork Wednesday! Oh wait, this is a blog post not an episode… ahh I must be confused by the inclusion of a TV poster this week! 😉

1. Blair Witch
Blair Witch

© Lionsgate

I know that the shape the trees are creating is a creepy shape, but I love the shape in the context of this poster. It’s also why I included the recent Blair Witch trailer in last week’s Trailer Tuesday, as it was a feature of the title cards, which I thought were great!

2. Voyage of Time
Voyage of Time

© Wild Bunch / Broad Green Pictures / IMAX

I was originally going to include a different Voyage of Time poster here, but when finding the image to embed I came across this one and was very taken by it. It’s so bold. … And sciencey.

3. American Horror Story

© FX Network

I tried to get into American Horror Story once. Tried and failed I’m afraid. But that doesn’t stop me from liking this AHS poster! I just really like the smoke. Of course it means nothing to me because I don’t watch the programme, but the negative space and sense of scale is lovely.

I just realised all the posters this week focus on some sort of shapely designs in the centre of each poster. You can tell what kind of posters I like 🙂 Cya!

A Dog's Purpose
Trailer Tuesday

Trailer Tuesday vol. 43: Jack Goes Home, Kevin Hart + DOGS!!

Due to last week’s Trailer Triday, which, if you can’t tell from my sneaky titling, was posted on Friday, and therefore included most of last week’s trailers, there aren’t many trailers for this week’s TT post. So it’s a nice easy one, and there is no excuse not to do your homework! Not even that the dog ate it! Speaking of dogs… *CRIES*

1. Jack Goes Home
When it is released? 14th Oct 2016 (USA)
What is it about? After his father is killed in a car crash, Jack travels home to Colorado to help nurse his mother (who was injured in the crash) back to health. There, he uncovers long buried secrets and lies within his family history, his parents, his friends and his very identity.
Immediate thoughts? Well that took a turn! Mystery gets me…

2. Kevin Hart: What Now?
When it is released? 11th Nov 2016 (UK), 14th Oct 2016 (USA)
What is it about? Comedian Kevin Hart performs in front of a crowd of 50,000 people at Philadelphia’s outdoor venue, Lincoln Financial Field.
Immediate thoughts? I liiiiike this trailer. I’ve seen a few trailers for Kevin Hart: What Now? and I’ve been confused every time as to what it is… is it a fictional film or is it a live comedy event? But this trailer makes a little more sense. It’s a live comedy event with some fictional behind-the-scenes! Right?

3. A Dog’s Purpose
When it is released? 27th Jan 2017 (UK and USA)
What is it about? A dog looks to discover his purpose in life over the course of several lifetimes and owners.
Immediate thoughts? Oh my god I’m cryingggggg DOG LOVERS COME ON!!! LIFE LOVERS YOU CAN JOIN IN TOO!!

So you’ve got three trailers to pick from… which film would you choose to go see, if you had to watch one of them?

Trailer Tuesday

Trailer Triday vol. 42: Robots watching robots! Morgan, Do Not Resist, Guardians + more!

We’re starting this week’s cheeky Trailer Tuesday-on-a-Friday with the same film I started last week’s TT with, Arrival! That’s got to be a good sign for the film, right? The stunningly beautiful Voyage of Time and Guardians are also making a reappearance with new footage, so if you’re into seeing nice looking things (…) then you’ll be happy with these! Enjoy 🙂

1. Arrival
When it is released? 11 Nov 2016 (UK and USA)
What is it about? Taking place after alien crafts land around the world, an expert linguist is recruited by the military to determine whether they come in peace or are a threat.
Immediate thoughts? I am loving all the imagery and the style of Arrival. I love the focus on the communication between the parties. Rather exciting indeed.

2. Generation Startup
When it is released? 23rd Sep 2016 (USA)
What is it about? Generation Startup takes us to the front lines of entrepreneurship in America, capturing the struggles and triumphs of six recent college graduates who put everything on the line to build startups in Detroit. Shot over 17 months, it’s an honest, in-the-trenches look at what it takes to launch a startup. Directed by Academy Award winner Cynthia Wade and award-winning filmmaker Cheryl Miller Houser, the film celebrates risk-taking, urban revitalization, and diversity while delivering a vital call-to-action-with entrepreneurship at a record low, the country’s economic future is at stake.
Immediate thoughts? Inspiration!

3. Do Not Resist
When it is released? 30th Sep 2016 (USA)
What is it about? Starting on the streets of Ferguson, Missouri, as the community grapples with the death of Michael Brown, DO NOT RESIST – the directorial debut of DETROPIA cinematographer Craig Atkinson – offers a stunning look at the current state of policing in America and a glimpse into the future. The Tribeca Film Festival winner for Best Documentary puts viewers in the center of the action – from a ride-along with a South Carolina SWAT team and inside a police training seminar that teaches the importance of “righteous violence” to the floor of a congressional hearing on the proliferation of military equipment in small-town police departments – before exploring where controversial new technologies including predictive policing algorithms could lead the field next.
Immediate thoughts? I’m impressed with this trailer, it is chilling. It has a very succinct tone right from the start, so it’s likely the film itself will be clearly defined too.

4. Kidnap
When it is released? 2nd Dec 2016 (USA)
What is it about? A mother stops at nothing to recover her kidnapped son.
Immediate thoughts? Yes Halle Berry! I kinda wanna see what happens, I got a bit into it, I’m surprised!

5. Voyage of Time
When it is released? 7th Oct 2016 (USA)
What is it about? An examination of the birth and death of the known universe.
Immediate thoughts? More succulent footage. It’s a pleasure to watch even just the trailer.

6. Sully
When it is released? 2nd Dec 2016 (UK), 9th Sep 2016 (USA)
What is it about? The story of Chesley Sullenberger, who became a hero after gliding his plane along the water in the Hudson River, saving all of the airplane flights 155 crew and passengers.
Immediate thoughts? Focusing more on the incident itself, this trailer for Sully as put tears in my eyes. Oooo. (not from sadness, from tension!!)

7. Audrie & Daisy
When it is released? 23rd Sep 2016 (USA)
What is it about? A look at the effects that online bullying has on the lives of teenagers and their community.
Immediate thoughts? I never really thought about the power that social media has to destroy someone’s life… The world is scary. Humans are…

8. The Dressmaker
When it is released? 20th Nov 2015 (UK), 23rd Sep 2016 (USA)
What is it about? A glamorous woman returns to her small town in rural Australia. With her sewing machine and haute couture style, she transforms the women and exacts sweet revenge on those who did her wrong.
Immediate thoughts? For some reason I have a lot of hope for this film. I love every little quirk it has. (I realise it has been out in the UK for a while, but I haven’t watched it yet!)

9. Guardians (Zashchitniki)
When it is released? 23rd Feb 2017 (Russia)
What is it about? During the Cold War, an organization called “Patriot” created a super-hero squad, which includes members of multiple soviet republics. For years, the heroes had to hide their identities, but in hard times they must show themselves again.
Immediate thoughts? Ahhh this reminds me of the X-Men: Apocalypse trailers (which are some of my favourites this year). Some of the effects could do with some more work, but I truly appreciate the longer cuts and stunning visuals this Guardians trailer has to offer.

10. Rings
When it is released? 4th Nov 2016 (UK), 28th Oct 2016 (USA)
What is it about? A young woman finds herself on the receiving end of a terrifying curse that threatens to take her life in seven days.
Immediate thoughts? Oh for goodness sake. I’ve only just started the trailer, and I have to include this because it’s The Ring. I loooooove The Ring, the American version, but this looks like a very cliche instalment. I’ll still watch it. But please, there is too much horror crap in this. I don’t think it will be as good as the first… But ooooh I just got to the end of the trailer and the plane bit looks interesting.

11. Morgan
When it is released? 2nd Sep 2016 (UK and USA)
What is it about? A corporate risk-management consultant must decide whether or not to terminate an artificially created humanoid being.
Immediate thoughts? Not a trailer, COMPLETELY BLOODY AMAZING!!!

12. The Disappointments Room
When it is released? 9th Sep 2016 (USA)
What is it about? A mother and her young son release unimaginable horrors from the attic of their rural dream home.

13. Blair Witch
When it is released? 15th Sep 2016 (UK), 16th Sep 2016 (USA)
What is it about? After discovering a video showing what he believes to be his sister’s experiences in the demonic woods of the Blair Witch, James and a group of friends head to the forest in search of his lost sibling.
Immediate thoughts? I don’t know how I feel about this film. I think it’s like the Rings trailer from earlier – it’s gonna be full of horror crap. (Oh I just realised how stupid that sounds… it’s a horror/thriller film so of course it will be full of horror crap!! You know what I mean) but I think this trailer was allllllmost really good. Showing the extended version of the scene where the girl gets stuck in a hole was a good move I think. But the main reason I am including this trailer is because I really liked the title cards and end card, and the logo for the film 😀

14. Boys in the Trees
When it is released? 9th Sep 2016 (Venice Film Festival, Italy)
What is it about? On Halloween 1997, two estranged teen skaters embark on a surreal journey through their memories, dreams and fears.
Immediate thoughts? You have my attention.

15. Lion
When it is released? 12th Oct 2016 (London Film Festival, UK), 25th Nov 2016 (USA)
What is it about? A five-year-old Indian boy gets lost on the streets of Calcutta, thousands of kilometers from home. He survives many challenges before being adopted by a couple in Australia; 25 years later, he sets out to find his lost family.
Immediate thoughts? Owww I wanna see that journey.

Thanks for reading! 🙂 Which is your favourite trailer this week?

Artwork Wednesday

Artwork Wednesday: The Unwilling + Moonlight

Two completely different posters and films for this week’s Artwork Wednesday. A drama and a horror. An indie and a… non-indie? Worn and clean. Inspiration and something to be mindful of… Alright let’s just get into it!

1. The Unwilling
The Unwilling

© Rough Diamond Productions

I love everything about this poster, except I can’t call it perfect. This is probably just me being picky, but I think the blood drips are unnecessary, and end up bringing an element of cliché. Otherwise, I love the colour, the symmetry, how the text is framed by the shape the images together create, the ‘real-poster’ style that adds tangibility… and the mix of poses and direction of gaze.

2. Moonlight

© A24

The more I look at this beautiful poster for Moonlight, the more I discover. The colour palette may have just become my new favourite colour combination. And it reminds me of something I tried to achieve unsuccessfully recently, and it has inspired me to try again.

Which poster do you prefer, Moonlight or The Unwilling? Thanks for reading 🙂

Trailer Tuesday

Trailer Tuesday vol. 41: Top-notch editing! Resident Evil, Dancer, Hidden Figures + more!

It feels good to be getting back in to Trailer Tuesday! This week we’re revisiting two films I’ve been keen to investigate in previous TT’s, in the form of When the Bough Breaks and Don’t Breathe. They’ve both come out with tightly edited trailers that give the other eight trailers featured this week a solid run for their money. That being said, this week’s trailers have all upped their E(diting)-game!

See what you think!

1. Arrival
When it is released? 11 Nov 2016 (UK and USA)
What is it about? Taking place after alien crafts land around the world, an expert linguist is recruited by the military to determine whether they come in peace or are a threat.
Immediate thoughts? I love teaser trailers so much more than trailers. So much intrigue!

2. The Good Neighbor
When it is released? 16th Sep 2016 (USA)
What is it about? A pair of high school kids try to trick a neighbor into thinking a house is haunted, but their intended victim turns out to be far more dangerous than they imagined.
Immediate thoughts? Films like this always get me! I want to know all the mysteries!

3. Resident Evil: The Final Chapter
When it is released? 24th Feb 2017 (UK), 27th Jan 2017 (USA)
What is it about? Picking up immediately after the events in Resident Evil: Retribution, humanity is on its last legs in Washington D.C. As the only survivor of what was meant to be humanity’s final stand against the undead hordes, Alice must return to where the nightmare began – Raccoon City, where the Umbrella Corporation is gathering its forces for a final strike against the only remaining survivors of the apocalypse. In a race against time Alice will join forces with old friends, and an unlikely ally, in an action packed battle with undead hordes and new mutant monsters. Between regaining her superhuman abilities at Wesker’s hand and Umbrella’s impending attack, this will be Alice’s most difficult adventure as she fights to save humanity, which is on the brink of oblivion.
Immediate thoughts? This looks really ridiculous (in a mostly good way!), and I like the editing and the music choice.

4. Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (International teaser)
When it is released and what is it about? Same as above!
Immediate thoughts? Ooooh I love this one too. It’s the end!!

5. Don’t Breathe
When it is released? 9th Sep 2016 (UK), 26th Aug 2016 (USA)
What is it about? A group of friends break into the house of a wealthy blind man, thinking they’ll get away with the perfect heist. They’re wrong.
Immediate thoughts? This is some neat editing.

6. Complete Unknown
When it is released? 26th Aug 2016 (USA)
What is it about? As a man contemplates moving to a new state with his wife for her graduate program, an old flame – a woman who often changes identities – reenters his life at a birthday dinner party.
Immediate thoughts? Another complete (eh!?) mystery that I’d love to uncover.

7. When Two Worlds Collide
When it is released? 17th Aug 2016 (USA)
What is it about? An indigenous environmental activist takes on the large businesses that are destroying the Amazon.
Immediate thoughts? Destroying something as beautiful and as breath-taking as the Amazon… how is that even imaginable? It’s all for nothing in the end. Important.

8. Dancer
When it is released? 16th Sep 2016 (USA)
What is it about? Sergei Polunin is a breathtaking ballet talent who questions his existence and his commitment to dance just as he is about to become a legend.
Immediate thoughts? I needn’t watch much of this trailer to know I need to watch the film (but of course I watched it all!). Stunnn

9. When the Bough Breaks
When it is released? 9th Sep 2016 (USA)
What is it about? A surrogate mom for a couple becomes dangerously obsessed with the soon-to-be father.
Immediate thoughts? I love this trailer! It’s a trailer, but it is edited like a teaser, and we all know how much i love teasers. Plus, in this one we get to see a lot more action compared to previous trailers for When the Bough Breaks.

10. Hidden Figures
When it is released? 24th Feb 2017 (UK), 13th Jan 2017 (USA)
What is it about? A team of African-American women provide NASA with important mathematical data needed to launch the program’s first successful space missions.
Immediate thoughts? This looks like a strong message from many accounts, wrapped up in a bit of a giggle!

Seeing as I’m such a fan of the editing this week, my question for you is: Which trailer do you reckon has the best editing?
