Trailer Tuesday

Trailer Tuesday vol. 46: Annabelle 2, Billie Joe Armstrong, Flock of Dudes + more!

Two films that did well at the box office return this week in the form of their sequels: Fifty Shades Darker and Annabelle 2. Clearly two quite different films but both with a sense of darkness (no, I’m not just talking about fifty shades getting darker!). The word dark has lost all meaning. Let’s move on!

1. Fifty Shades Darker
When it is released? 10th Feb 2017 (UK and USA)
What is it about? While Christian wrestles with his inner demons, Anastasia must confront the anger and envy of the women who came before her.
Immediate thoughts? I wonder if this will have more substance than the first one seemed to have.. (sorry for judging without seeing but..)

2. Trolls
When it is released? 21st Oct 2016 (UK), 4th Nov 2016 (USA)
What is it about? From the creators of Shrek comes the most smart, funny, irreverent animated comedy of the year, DreamWorks’ Trolls. This holiday season, enter a colorful, wondrous world populated by hilariously unforgettable characters and discover the story of the overly optimistic Trolls, with a constant song on their lips, and the comically pessimistic Bergens, who are only happy when they have trolls in their stomach. Featuring original music from Justin Timberlake, and soon-to-be classic mash-ups of songs from other popular artists, the film stars the voice talents of Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake, Russell Brand, James Corden, Kunal Nayyar, Ron Funches, Icona Pop, Gwen Stefani, and many more. DreamWorks’ TROLLS is a fresh, broad comedy filled with music, heart and hair-raising adventures. In November of 2016, nothing can prepare you for our new Troll world.
Immediate thoughts? Ouch! My emotions ;(

3. Annabelle 2
When it is released? 26th May 2017 (UK), 19th May 2017 (USA)
What is it about? Several years after the tragic death of their little girl, a dollmaker and his wife welcome a nun and several girls from a shuttered orphanage into their home, soon becoming the target of the dollmaker’s possessed creation, Annabelle.
Immediate thoughts? oooooowwwww. I haven’t seen the first one, but of course this looks creepy!

4. The Caretaker
When it is released? 30th Sep 2016 (USA)
What is it about? A young woman returns home to care for her gravely ill grandmother, only to begin sleepwalking and envisioning spirits.

5. Christine
When it is released? 14th Oct 2016 (USA)
What is it about? The story of 1970s TV reporter Christine Chubbuck.
Immediate thoughts? Things just got interesting.

6. Ordinary World
When it is released? 14th Oct 2016 (USA)
What is it about? An aging punk rocker copes with life after rock.
Immediate thoughts? Erm, Billie Joe Armstrong!!

7. Nocturnal Animals
When it is released? 4th Nov 2016 (UK), 9th Dec 2016 (USA)
What is it about? An art gallery owner is haunted by her ex-husband’s novel, a violent thriller she interprets as a veiled threat and a symbolic revenge tale.
Immediate thoughts? Myyyyystery! Also I’m totally nocturnal soo..

8. Flock of Dudes
When it is released? 30th Sep 2016 (USA)
What is it about? A 30-something year old decides to “break up” with his best buds in order to finally grow up.
Immediate thoughts? Heh, I like the idea of a break-up film between friends, in the style of a couple!

9. Harry and Snowman
When it is released? 30th Sep 2016 (USA)
What is it about? Dutch immigrant, Harry deLeyer, journeyed to the United States after World War II and developed a transformative relationship with a broken down Amish plow horse he rescued off a slaughter truck bound for the glue factory. Harry paid eighty dollars for the horse and named him Snowman. In less than two years, Harry & Snowman went on to win the triple crown of show jumping, beating the nations blue bloods and they became famous and traveled around the world together. Their chance meeting at a Pennsylvania horse auction saved them both and crafted a friendship that lasted a lifetime. Eighty-six year old Harry tells their Cinderella love story firsthand, as he continues to train on today’s show jumping circuit.
Immediate thoughts? While I don’t necessarily agree with show jumping or horse racing, the connection between animals and humans always gets me, and Harry and Snowman seems to be no exception!

What did you think of the trailers this week? Anything take your fancy?

Free Fire
Artwork Wednesday

Artwork Wednesday: Collateral Beauty, Free Fire + Trolls

This week’s Artwork Wednesday includes one of my favourite posters of this year, a poster for Free Fire, as well as the first poster which I found had too much negative space! What! I know! What is happening?!

1. Collateral Beauty
Collateral Beauty

I’m attracted to the simplicity, as always, but I’m not 100% sure about the negative space (that’s a first for me!). Nevertheless, I’ve included this one because the colour and light is so soft, it really suits the message of the film (make sure you check out the trailer in this week’s Trailer Tuesday if you haven’t seen it!).

2. Free Fire

I just, suddenly love this poster. I was looking at it for just a few seconds, and then it almost physically hit me, that I love it. I felt the love. How cheesy does that sound? BUT IT’S TRUE! I love the arms, the font, and the plain white background. But the arms, man, they are just genius.

3. Trolls

© Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation

The structure pleases me greatly. I love, love the colours, I think they have been really perfected, and I love the composition of each troll image.

Do you love the Free Fire poster as much as I do? Or do the Trolls or Collateral Beauty posters take your fancy?

Collateral Beauty
Trailer Tuesday

Trailer Tuesday vol. 45: Free Fire, The White Helmets, Supersonic + more!

I love this week of Trailer Tuesday simply because it includes the man himself, Will Smith. Isn’t that reason enough to keep reading? It’s not? Oh. Well I think it is… but if you really need more than Will Smith, you can also have a Netflix documentary in Syria, a hilarious shoot-out, the secrets of Oasis and John Lennon, and a thief who steals a river… or something like that.

1. Collateral Beauty
When it is released? 30th Dec 2016 (UK), 16th Dec 2016 (USA)
What is it about? A tragic event sends a New York ad man on a downward spiral.
Immediate thoughts? I have my suspicions about how this will end… but I won’t tell you just in case it’s true ;P It could be reaaaal cheesy, but I love Will Smith and it made me emosh so I’m including it!

2. The White Helmets
When it is released? 16th Sep 2016 (Netflix)
What is it about? As daily airstrikes pound civilian targets in Syria, a group of indomitable first responders risk their lives to rescue victims from the rubble.
Immediate thoughts? Hundreds of bombs, every day?

3. Free Fire
When it is released? 31st Mar 2017 (UK), 2017 (USA)
What is it about? Set in Boston in 1978, a meeting in a deserted warehouse between two gangs turns into a shootout and a game of survival.
Immediate thoughts? An injection of comedy in an otherwise serious and violent scene gives Free Fire a lot of promise!

4. Supersonic
When it is released? 14th Oct 2016 (UK)
What is it about? An in-depth look at the life and music of Manchester-based rock band, Oasis.
Immediate thoughts? Not knowing much about Oasis, this would definitely be interesting to watch… All I know is that they are one of the biggest British bands, I had no idea they rose to fame in just 3 years!

5. The Lennon Report
When it is released? 7th Oct 2016 (USA)
What is it about? The unheard true story of the moments after John Lennon was shot as seen through the eyes of those who lived it. Alan Weiss, an ambitious young news producer, finds himself in a position to break the biggest story of the year following a violent motorcycle accident. The emergency department at Roosevelt Hospital discovers a John Doe shooting victim is the worlds biggest rock star and struggles to keep the news quiet while working to save his life.
Immediate thoughts? The truth is always so interesting, isn’t it?

6. The River Thief
When it is released? 14th Oct 2016 (USA, internet)
What is it about? Diz (Joel Courtney) is a reckless teenage drifter living life on the run. Abandoned by his parents as a child, he looks out for himself and doesn’t accept handouts. He takes whatever he wants and runs. Jaded and determined to answer to no one, Diz lives a life marked by thievery and abandonment. Things change for Diz when he floats into a small town on the Snake River. There he is confronted by an unflappable old man named Marty and falls for Marty’s guarded granddaughter, Selah. When Diz robs a local drug-dealing crazy, he becomes the owner of a giant pile of cash and the target of two vicious killers. With more money than he knows what to do with, and criminals at his heels, Diz puts the people he’s learned to care about in danger, still trying to win Selah. But some things can’t be stolen or bought. The River Thief is a film about guilt, self-sacrifice, and accepting life as a gift.
Immediate thoughts? While I’m not sure about it, I’m sort of intrigued by The River Thief… But I can’t put my finger on why.

Thank you for reading 🙂 Let me know if you have a favourite trailer this week!

Artwork Wednesday

Artwork Wednesday: The Unwilling + Moonlight

Two completely different posters and films for this week’s Artwork Wednesday. A drama and a horror. An indie and a… non-indie? Worn and clean. Inspiration and something to be mindful of… Alright let’s just get into it!

1. The Unwilling
The Unwilling

© Rough Diamond Productions

I love everything about this poster, except I can’t call it perfect. This is probably just me being picky, but I think the blood drips are unnecessary, and end up bringing an element of cliché. Otherwise, I love the colour, the symmetry, how the text is framed by the shape the images together create, the ‘real-poster’ style that adds tangibility… and the mix of poses and direction of gaze.

2. Moonlight

© A24

The more I look at this beautiful poster for Moonlight, the more I discover. The colour palette may have just become my new favourite colour combination. And it reminds me of something I tried to achieve unsuccessfully recently, and it has inspired me to try again.

Which poster do you prefer, Moonlight or The Unwilling? Thanks for reading 🙂

The Shawshank Redemption
The Movies Tag

The Movies Tag Q15: Favourite drama film?

QUESTION: Favourite drama film?
ANSWER: The Shawshank Redemption

Although it’s not a film I always have a craving to watch, like Harry Potter or The Hobbit, The Shawshank Redemption is a film I could watch over and over and never get bored.

I haven’t actually watched it in quite a while, but the weight of the emotion still sits on my shoulders every time I think about it or come across it for whatever reason.

Right from the beginning until the very end you understand each character’s place, so there’s nothing in the way of the story. Of course, Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman are who make the film what it is. Their characterisations and onscreen relationship make it even easier to root for these so-called ‘criminals’. Consequently, we are able to share the moments of their triumph, at least on an emotional level.

Basically, if you’ve seen The Shawshank Redemption, then you don’t need me to convince you of its brilliance. If you haven’t, you’ll more than likely seen it on many ‘Films to see before you die’ lists, and for good reason. My conclusion? If you want to see a thoughtful film about truth, hope, and possibly the most beautiful relationship you’ll ever witness which isn’t romantic, then this is the one for you.

Have you seen The Shawshank Redemption? If you have, what did you think of it? What is your favourite drama film? I want to know!
