Artwork Wednesday: They’re Watching and Swiss Army Man!

This instalment of Artwork Wednesday includes two genres that I love: Comedy and Horror. But to be honest, it could be argued that both posters have a comedic value to them… It’s a nice quick one this week so let’s take a look!

Trailer Tuesday

Trailer Tuesday vol. 33: Swiss Army Man, After Circus, The Jungle Book IMAX + more!

Possibly one of the most important Trailer Tuesday’s ever. This TT includes my favourite trailer of the year so far. Well I guess technically it’s not the trailer that is my favourite, it’s the film. Well… at least, from what I’ve seen in the trailer.

Alright I’ve confused both of us enough! On with the trailers!

1. Dheepan
When it is released? 8th Apr 2016 (UK), 13th May 2016 (USA)
What is it about? Dheepan is a Sri Lankan Tamil warrior who flees to France and ends up working as a caretaker outside Paris.
Immediate thoughts? I love this trailer.

2. After Circus
When it is released? 4th Apr 2016 (Sarasota Film Festival, USA)
What is it about? Dolly Jacob grabs hold of two long straps dangling down from the shadows of the big top. She hoists herself up…and begins to fly. From 50 feet below, what the audience can’t see are the lines on Dolly’s smiling face. Few of us have ever given a second thought as to what happens to these artists ‘off the wire’ after they’ve spent their lives entertaining and inspiring us. This film takes a unique look at a tightly drawn community in Sarasota, Florida, one with a deep value system that seems almost out of place today. With humour and warmth, these bigger-than-life characters are determined to support each other through thick and thin, at a time when they need it most: the end of their careers as Circus performers. When the march of time forces them to step out of the ring, After Circus depicts how performers survive without their lifeblood of the glittering spotlight and fervent applause.
Immediate thoughts? Oooo I’ve never been to the circus, but I’d love to find out about the lives of circus performers.

3. How to Prepare for Prison
When it is released? 28th Apr 2016 (Hot Docs International Documentary Festival, Canada)
What is it about? How to Prepare for Prison focuses on the lives of three vastly different people who are steeling themselves against the daunting prospect of serving prison sentences for the very first time. Shot over three years, the film captures their growing psychological trauma as their children and families face poverty and social shame, and the individuals charged face their fears about violence in prison and whether or not they can survive the loss of freedom. All three experience protracted waits for their trials and, whether they’ve really done the crime or not, feel the enormous power of the law. The film goes beyond the notion of guilt or innocence. By offering an intimate look at the lives and states of mind of those awaiting judgment—filled with regret, defiance and stark fear—it deepens our understanding of the legal system and cultural ideas about crime and punishment. The stakes are high. Lives are changed forever.
Immediate thoughts? Hmmm this could be interesting.

4. The Apology
When it is released? 30th Apr 2016 (Hot Docs International Documentary Festival, Canada)
What is it about? The Apology follows the personal journeys of three former “comfort women” who were among the 200,000 girls and young women kidnapped and forced into military sexual slavery by the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. Some 70 years after their imprisonment in so-called “comfort stations”, the three “grandmothers-Grandma Gil in South Korea, Grandma Cao in China, and Grandma Adela in the Philippines-face their twilight years in fading health. After decades of living in silence and shame about their past, they know that time is running out to give a first-hand account of the truth and ensure that this horrific chapter of history is not forgotten. Whether they are seeking a formal apology from the Japanese government or summoning the courage to finally share their secret with loved ones, their resolve moves them forward as they seize this last chance to set future generations on a course for reconciliation, healing, and justice.
Immediate thoughts? Important.

5. We All Love the Seaside
When it is released? 28th Apr 2016 (Hot Docs International Documentary Festival, Canada)
What is it about? Hybrid documentary meets magic realism in this filmic fable that follows a group of journeymen as they bide their time between North African and European borders. While they wait, they relate a story about the world that the wind and trees might tell. We’re all called to different places for different reasons, but nowadays only some are permitted passage.
Immediate thoughts? I am enjoying the concept of this film, ‘hybrid documentary meets magic realism’. And that shot is just stunning.

6. The Jungle Book
When it is released? 15th Apr 2016 (UK and USA)
What is it about? An orphan boy is raised in the jungle with the help of a pack of wolves, a bear, and a black panther.
Immediate thoughts? AHHHH EPIC!

7. Swiss Army Man *FAV OF THE YEAR!!!
When it is released? 1st Jul 2016 (USA)
What is it about? A hopeless man stranded in the wilderness befriends a dead body and together they go on a surreal journey to get home.
Immediate thoughts? what the ffffffff. This is the most interesting and weird thing I’ve seen all year

Let me know in the comments below what your thoughts are on this week’s trailers! Stay tuned for Artwork Wednesday tomorrow and have a lovely week! 🙂
